As a travel agent (and a Gold Coast local), I receive loads of questions about the Gold Coast Theme Parks – from which tickets are the best value to which theme parks are more suitable for toddlers, teens, and even grandparents.
Having visited the theme parks with our Mini’s, and having helped countless families plan their theme park adventures, here is everything you need to know to make the most of your visit – without the stress.
Theme Parks & Ticket Groups
Movie World, Sea World, and Wet’n’Wild are all owned by Village Roadshow. That means that you can purchase a multi-park pass that gives you access to all three.
Dreamworld and WhiteWater World are part of the Dreamworld Group, and you can purchase a combined pass for both these parks.
Travel Tip: There are no passes that combine both groups. For example, you can’t buy one pass that gives you access to Dreamworld and Sea World.
Which Theme Parks Suit Which Ages?
While all parks have a mix of attractuons, some are better suited for certain age groups. Here’s a breakdown based on our personal expeience and client feedback.
Dreamworld
A great all-rounder, especially for families with young kids.
- For little ones: Wiggles World, gentle rides, small wildlife zoo, small splash zone
- For older kids/teens: Big thrill rides and rollercoasters
- Bonus: A scenic train ride and tiger show offer slower-paced options
- New: Rivertown (opened 2025)
Travel Tip: Pack swimmers and a towel for the little ones to cool off in the splash zone
WhiteWater World
Located right next to Dreamworld (they share a car park), this water park is an ideal option for families wanting a fun, wet day out.
- All ages: From toddler splash zones to big thrill slides
- Seasonal Closure: Usually closed April – September
Travel Tip: You could do both Dreamworld and WhiteWater World in one day if you prefer shorter visits to each.
Sea World
Yes, the global Sea World brand has faced criticism in the past – but we’ve been and we’re confident in recommending it.
- Focus: Marine life, animal experiences, shows, and a side of thrill rides
- For kids: A fantastic splash zone & adventure playground
- For adults: A calmer vibe for the kids can make life easier for the adults
Travel Tip: Located in the heart of the tourist district (Main Beach) Sea World is often easier to travel to than other theme parks.
Movie World
A high-energy experience with lots of sound, characters, and thrill rides
- For thrill seekers: rollercoasters galore, action packed stunt shows
- For young kids: There are junior rides, but the noise and intensity of the park overall might be overwhelming for some
- Parents: Expect loud music, roaming characters, and a classic Hollywood theme.
Travel Tip: If you’ve got young kids this one might be a little overwhelming compared to Sea World or Dreamworld.
Wet’n’Wild
Gold Coast’s biggest water park and a popular choice for summer.
- For everyone: Giant slides, lazy rivers, wave pools, and splash areas
- Open year-round, but note:
- Some rides may close in winter for maintenance
- Pools are heated during winter but customers say they can still feel chilly
Travel Tip: Wet’n’Wild and Movie World are located near each other making it an option to have short visits to each, within the same day.
Tickets & Best Value Tips
- Buy in advance – Even if that’s just the morning of your visit. Online tickets are usually cheaper than buying at the gate.
- Fast track-passes are worth it during school holidays if you are keen on thrille rides. These let you skip the queue, however a limited number of fast track passes are available per day.
- Multi-day passes (3, 5 or 7 day options depending on the park) offer the best value if you’re visiting any parks more than once.
- Ask your travel agent (aka me!) – we often have access to better prices or bundled deals than what is available online.
Travel Tip: Choose between Dreamworld Group or Village Roadshow Group when buying passes – they’re not interchangeable.
Final Thoughts from a Local
The Gold Coast theme parks are a fantastic option for families, but each park offers a different vibe. Your best choice depends on your kids’ ages, your schedule and what kind of day you want to have – relaxed and scenic, or high-energy and full of rides.
