Planning the Philippines? Here’s What Actually Works

Flights don’t always line up, ferries take longer than expected, and not every island combo makes sense – here’s what actually works, from someone who books it.

The Philippines looks easy to plan.
It’s not.

Between the flights, ferries, and islands that don’t quite connect the way you’d expect, this is one destination where a good plan makes all the difference. Here’s what actually works.

1. Getting Around Isn’t as Simple as It Looks

This is where most people get caught out.

Take El Nido — it looks like a quick hop on the map. It’s not.

Flights are limited, connections rarely line up, and suddenly what looked like an easy arrival turns into multiple tickets and a stressful day of travel.

That’s why we often route via Puerto Princesa and transfer across the island instead.
Yes, it’s around five hours — but it’s straightforward, reliable, and avoids things going sideways mid-journey.

And honestly? It’s part of the experience.

2. Not All Island Combos Work Well Together

You can do multiple islands… but that doesn’t mean you should do all of them.

One of the best combos we see working well is Palawan + Siargao — a mix of scenery and social energy.

Where people often get it wrong is trying to squeeze in too much, or picking places that don’t connect easily.

A good example: staying in Moalboal sounds great — but most tours actually depart from Cebu.
That can mean hours of back-and-forth transfers you didn’t plan for.

Sometimes the “less exciting” base is the smarter move.

3. Instagram vs Reality

The Philippines looks incredible online — and it is — but what you don’t see is the travel in between.

Some of those “must-visit” spots?
They’re harder to reach than they look.

And not every place is worth the effort it takes to get there — which is where good planning makes all the difference.

4. Accommodation Isn’t Just a Place to Sleep

This one matters more than people expect.

If you’re heading to Siargao, for example — the vibe is everything.
Where you stay can completely shape your experience.

Some travellers want social, high-energy hostels. Others want something quieter and more polished.

Neither is wrong — but picking the wrong one for you? That’s where trips fall flat.

5. The Biggest Mistakes I See

This is where things usually unravel:

  • Trying to do too much in one trip
  • Booking flights, hotels, and transfers separately that don’t quite line up
  • Underestimating how long it actually takes to get between places
  • Relying on multiple flight connections that leave minimal room for error

That last one is a big one in the Philippines.

A lot of routes rely on smaller airlines, tighter schedules, and limited backup options. If one flight is delayed or cancelled, it’s not always a simple fix — and that’s where plans can quickly come unstuck.

Individually, these don’t seem like a big deal.
But combined? They’re the difference between a smooth trip and a stressful one.

The Bottom Line

The Philippines is incredible — but it rewards the people who plan it properly.

When it flows, it really flows.
When it doesn’t… it can feel like hard work.
