Travel isn’t something you want to leave to chance.
From booking flights to adding comfort, here are our professional tips to keep your journey seamless.
Missing a Flight Can Cancel Your Entire Itinerary
It might seem like a minor misstep, but missing just one flight can lead to your entire itinerary being cancelled, including the return journey.
That’s because airlines sell multi-segment tickets as one through-fare. If you miss any leg – intentional or not – you’re classed as a “no-show and the remaining flights on that ticket (including the return flights) are typically voided.
Many travellers aren’t aware of this until they turn up at the airport only to discover their onward flights are no longer ticketed. At Chasing Dreams Travel, we flag potential risks for our clients, and always work within the airline Minimum Connection Time (MCT) rules to reduce the chance of missed connections and voided tickets. Often tickets purchased through third party websites haven’t factored in MCT’s, which can put travellers at risk.
If you do face a cancellation, remember: being a calm yet persistent “squeaky wheel” at the airlines service desk often helps secure faster rebooking.
Value vs. Price
Some travellers shop solely on price, while others look for value. The key is knowing when saving a few dollars could actually cost more in the long run.
Take airfares, for example. The cheapest ticket might come with extra costs – hefty change fees, inconvenient flight times that drive up transfer costs, or add-ons like baggage and meals. Comparing the lowest fare against your preferred fare helps you strike the right balance. Often the price difference is less than you might expect.
Accommodation is another area where value matters. Staying closer to your attractions may work our cheaper overall than booking a lower-cost property further out of town. And for families, investing in a one-or-two bedroom space instead of squeezing into a studio can make a world of difference to rest, comfort and overall holiday enjoyment.
Tag Your Bags Properly
Lost luggage isn’t always about bags without names – sometimes tagged bags go missing too. The problem often comes down to flimsy tags that detach in transit. To prevent this, secure your name tag in a way that can’t be easily removed. Avoid attaching tags to handles or straps that could break off. This small step can make a big difference to starting your trip without your belongings in hand.
Don’t Overlook Travel Insurance
It’s surprising how many travellers spend thousands on flights, hotels, and transfers, yet skip travel insurance. A good policy doesn’t just cover cancellations and lost bags – it can protect you in cases of medical emergencies, evacuations, or disruptions caused by strikes or natural disasters.
Equally important is making sure your planned activities are covered, For example, if your itinerary includes a cruise, you may need cruise cover specifically. Without it, even a well-intentioned policy might leave you exposed if something goes wrong at sea.
Plan For Flight Delays
Early flights generally have fewer delays than afternoon or evening services. That’s because delays accumulate throughout the day. Wherever possible, book earlier departures and allow extra time for connections – it reduces stress and increases the likelihood of smooth travel.
Organise Your Arrival Transfers
Not all destinations have readily available Uber or ride share options, and arriving in a new location after a long flight can leave you feeling weary. Pre-booking your arrival transfer – even if it costs more than flagging down a taxi – brings peace of mind and a smoother start. For your return transfers, once you’re familiar with the area, you can often switch to a local taxi or ride share.
Pack Smart
Lost luggage is always a possibility, so keep essentials and anything irreplaceable in your carry-on. Reserve checked luggage for items that can be replaced if needed.
A simple rule to follow: the 3-3-3 method. Pack three tops, three bottoms, and three pairs of shoes (a walking/sports pair, casual thongs or sandals, and something suitable for dining out). With these nine items you can create up to 27 different outfit combinations – plenty for most trips, without overpacking.
